Daily algal (cyanobacteriae) surveillance with the help of volunteers-Sweden
|
Daily algal (cyanobacteriae) surveillance with the help of volunteers at some beaches at the island of Oland, Baltic Sea. This year we are placing the information (photos from the beaches, algae from 1 l filtered water, cyanobacteria densities if needed) in the webpage not only in Swedish but in English as well.
This surveillance last year has decreased losses from tourist evasion of more than 30 million US $. We could show that there were no algal accumulations on these beaches, even when the satellite pictures showed the Baltic (and Oland) completely covered by the blooms. The public trusted the information and continued coming for vacations on this island.
